Definition:

A grammatical category used for analysis of word-classes displaying such contrasts as masculine/feminine/neuter, animate/inanimate, etc. It is also important to distinguish natural gender, items referring to the sex of real-world entities, and grammatical gender, which does not always correspond to sex, but which has an important role in signaling grammatical relations between words in a sentence.
