Definition:

The laryngeal setting refers to differences in the timing of laryngeal activity in relation to oral articulation. Most languages have phonemic contrasts between classes of stops which differ in the mode of action of the larynx, or in the timing of laryngeal activity. [Ladefoged and Maddieson 1996: 47]
