Definition:

A term used to describe a language as a whole, with each of its component parts functioning according to an overall convention of usage to enable the members of a speech community to interchange information. Most linguists agree on a 'system of systems', i.e. the arrangement of units on hierarchically ordered and inter-related levels. [Hartmann and Stork 1972: 231]
